As a lifelong Presbyterian, I can safely say we don’t give the Holy Spirit a lot of attention…once a year at Pentecost at best. But even in my growing up years, Pentecost wasn’t always a thing. The Holy Spirit was often presented as the misunderstood, mysterious, silent partner of the Godhead. Minimizing the fact that the Holy Spirit is the amazing, powerful, and ever-present indwelling of God.
As I have thought about that recently I have decided to chalk it up to our Presbyterian heritage that focuses on our intellect. We are known as “People of the Book.” I would even say we like knowing facts, believing in the tangible, and understanding the understandable! Well friends, the Holy Spirit does not fit into that mold (so let’s not spend a lot of time on that subject!) Even the Apostles Creed doesn’t expound much on who the Holy Spirit is or what the Spirit does. Yet, the authors of the Creed knew the importance of the acknowledgement of the third person of the Trinity enough to include the Spirit in the Creed.
The more time I have spent studying the Holy Spirit the more I see the Spirit at work in and around my life. I love the description of the Holy Spirit is the In-Dwelling God…for it is the Spirit whom Jesus sent to be our advocate and helper when he returned to Heaven. It is the Spirit who dwells within us when we accept Jesus into our hearts. The Spirit is constantly in motion moving in and among us…dwelling with us. So, how would you describe the Holy Spirit…Teacher? Advocate? Comforter? Helper? Friend? (For me it truly is all of the above depending on the moment!)
I hope you will join us this Sunday as we continue our journey with the Apostles Creed.
Blessings,
Pastor Jenni
I BELIEVE in the Holy Spirit.
